An elegant mahogany & pink marble commode from France, 19th century, in the Louis XVI style that easily fits with Empire and transitional tastes that value noble materials. The top surface is a thick slab of unusual pink and gray marble shaped to turreted front corners and a slight flange at the back. Making up the body of the piece are three spacious drawers outlined in brass trim that glide easily using brass bail pulls; one key is present to share between the locking drawers. An extraordinary Italian walnut commode from the 19th century, Neoclassical in style, decorated with a graphic marquetry of dark/light woods that creates movement and definition over the exterior. The surface uses two, beautiful planks shaped to chamfered corners and outlined around the edges with a sawtooth pattern of inlay in contrasting light/dark tones. A case of five drawers includes two small drawers in the top row over three wider drawers all inlaid with a geometric design of elongated checkerboard strips of alternating blonde and dark woods. Each drawer opens by ring pull hardware; note the escutcheons are only decorative without an original key present. Chamfered front corners are inlaid with a very narrow triangle rising from the feet to end in a little diamond perhaps suggesting a candle or symbolizing an eternal flame. The side panels have inlaid designs complementary to those on the drawer fronts so from every perspective one can admire the visionary intentions of the maker even two centuries later. An extraordinary French mahogany commode from the 18th century, Louis XVI Period, decorated with an impressive marquetry technique that creates movement and definition over the drawer fronts and side panels. The commode retains its original slab of gray marble, the surface animated by frenetic white veining, and shaped to turreted front corners. Across the top row are three drawers of geometric marquetry designs to outline them–like two rows of twisting ribbon–in alternating blonde and dark woods. Brass bail pulls operate the left and right drawers while the middle drawer requires the key to function as a pull (lock is intact but does not turn). The two wide drawers across the center and below, follow the rhythm as above with three distinct rectangular “frames” around the drawer hardware, in graphic marquetry of dark/light woods that have been hand-decorated in wispy patterns of red pigment suggesting plumes or waves–adding depth and regal grandeur to this already fine example of the woodworker’s craft. The side panels have complementary inlaid designs, themes which are replicated down the turrets (using marquetry to imply fluted recesses) moving into the conical feet so from every perspective one can admire the visionary intentions of the maker even two centuries later. This marble-topped fruitwood commode from France is a more recent (1900s) interpretation of a Louis XVI original, such a distinct style that brings regal refinement to any interior for clothing or other linens. Saint Anne marble on the top surface exhibits wispy patches of gray-scale in the stone, finished in turreted front corners and flat at the back. Each of the three drawers are embellished with (patinated) brass trim around the paneling and easily glide using bail pull handles to operate. One key is shared between the three working locks. French 19th century Directoire style fruitwood chest of drawers, appearing to be a semainier except with six drawers instead of the requisite seven. Below the modest wood top and rounded corners is a stack of six drawers inlaid with ebonized diamond shapes for graphic contrast to the glowing fruitwood. Note the bottom drawer is actually double-height with two diamonds to blend quietly in with the upper five. Sometimes referred to as a lingerie chest, the height and narrow proportions would elegantly host the clothing or personal effects of nearly anyone–suiting a range of transitional decorating tastes. All drawers glide with ease using simple brass ring pulls to open, no key is present to operate the locks. Short, cabriole legs lift the case from the floor. French mahogany vintage 20th century semainier–crafted in the Louis XVI style and quality–this Neoclassical dresser offers seven drawers (one for each day of the week) outlined in brass and crowned with a marble top. The top surface of smoky gray marble has been finished with turreted front corners, traced with dark veining almost hiding a thin line from a previous repair. Solid mahogany wrapping the exterior of the case has been cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to maintain its luster, glistening in the light like caramel and complemented by brass hardware. Each drawer is fitted with a pair of brass bail pulls and diamond shaped escutcheons over working locks (one key included to share among them). A handsome walnut & marble commode from France, an 18th century original in the Louis XVI style, fitting with traditional to transitional interiors of today. The removable stone top is a thick cut of Saint Anne marble that has been shaped to turreted front corners and square at the back; the maker has chosen to sign the piece on the top of the left legs which is only visible when the stone is removed (an “L. Martine” and what appears to be “Louvard”). Making up the body of the piece are three spacious drawers that glide easily using repoussé brass ring pulls; keyhole escutcheons decorate the fronts however no key is present. The drawers are of excellent proportion to offer elegant storage for clothes, linens, or other household essentials. Fluting on the corners of the case flows into turned, tapering legs on brass sabot feet lifting the case from the floor. Look closely and one can see the panels on the sides are a single, wide plank to showcase the beauty of the wood grain. Early 20th century Dutch Empire-style mahogany tall chest of six drawers featuring Neoclassical elements with Art Deco geometry. A pierced brass gallery wraps the sides and partially the front, metallic details that are repeated on the drawer fronts as slivers of inlaid brass pinstripes and escutcheons. Cast bronze caryatid busts to the left and right are accented with parcel gilt to underscore the Egyptian references; they are mounted atop tapering pilasters–also inlaid with brass–that end in tiny replicas of human feet in cast bronze at the bottom drawer. A flamed effect from bookmatched mahogany calls attention to the luminous wood grain in striated caramel tones that animate the drawer fronts. Each drawer is fitted with a pair of drop brass bail pulls to open; the escutcheons are purely decorative in the absence of a key to operate the locks. The case is supported by turned legs on little brass knob feet. A tall Dutch Empire style chest crafted from mahogany and ebonized wood, made during the 1800s. This impressive case piece has six drawers, sharing a key between them for working locks, bookmatched on the fronts and each with two ring drawer pulls for easy accessibility. Note the thin, fluted texture on the oval handles for a distinct look. Ebonized columns flanking the roomy drawers round out the chamfered front corners and are topped with ball finials. A French Louis-Phillipe painted commode circa 1850 with faux marble top and four drawers. This lovely commode features a very interesting and unique trompe l’oeil Saint Anne marble top, hand-painted to capture the signature ribbons of light gray on charcoal, sitting above a perfectly organized case of original honey-gold painted exterior. Four drawers, a narrow curving frieze drawer at the top followed by three larger ones, are each fitted with a simple brass oval shaped escutcheon. Two original keys are present. A small key opens the top drawer lock and one key is shared between the other three drawers. The commode is raised on block feet and has an unpainted paneled back. With its elegant lines and a most particular patina this commode is sure to add just the right stylish touch to a bedroom or living area. A handsome Louis XV style commode circa 1800 or earlier. The fantastic charcoal marble top has a molded edge, shaped in the same fashion as the body. Below, a stack of three drawers features impressive cast ormolu pulls and escutcheons. Two keys are included for all three functioning locks. The wonderfully patinated hardwood is accentuated with scrolling paneling. Along the bottom edge is a scalloped apron with a modeled edge features a floral carving in the center.
