The three foot base features the same detail taken from an original early 20th century French bistro table. All of the lower doors unlock to reveal a removable, finished shelf. The burled mahogany veneer has been repaired in some places, adding to its antique charm without taking away from the quality of the whole. Swirling acanthus leaves with flowers flank the basket beautifully and are meant to represent fertility. The top of the wonderfully paneled doors display well carved grapes on the vine to represent abundance. This wonderful walnut secrétaire à abattant was constructed in the style of Louis XVI during the 19th century. Topped with a great piece of black and white marble. A single, slim drawer at the top features a pair of brass rectangular drop ring pulls and a simple brass inset keyhole that matches the lower three drawers. The front of the desk opens to reveal the writing surface and interior storage. The interior is outfitted with four small drawers flanking a large center pigeon hole above a longer drawer. The black leather writing surface is in wonderful antique condition. All four corners feature fluting. The lower storage area houses a single shelf. Three keys are included for all functioning locks. They are hung on large steel barrel hinges with a Greek Key styled escutcheon plate and close before a massive storage space with two adjustable shelves that measure 21-¾” deep. The sinuous lines of the scalloped apron continue to the antique’s carved escargot feet in classic Louis XV-style. A single key works the lock on the door and acts as the pull.
