Vintage Bible Illustrated by Endre Balint 1966
$495.0014.13"H x 11"W x 3.38"D
Dimensions: 14 ⅛” H x 11” W x 3 ⅜” D
Vintage (circa 1966) La Sainte Bible illustrated by Hungarian artist, Endre Balint with text in French. This special collaboration combined the research and translation from École Biblique et Archéologique Française de Jérusalem (an academic institution founded in the late 19th century) with the bold, modern style of Balint to produce a work that was engaging and approachable to read for a wide audience. The colorful supporting images bring the text to life through thought-provoking scenes which are a complete departure from any previous styles or schools of religious art but still very attuned to the emotional and spiritual weight of the verses. Condition is very good with some wear to the red leather-bound cover; the gilded edges of the pages have dulled; some foxing of the paper, otherwise the plates are still vibrant to enjoy. 18th Century Portuguese Altar
$2,650.0034.25"H x 18.75"W x 9.88"D
Dimensions: 34 1/4” H x 18 3/4” W x 9 ⅞” D
An exquisite work of 18th century Portuguese craftsmanship, this carved, painted, and gilded wood tabletop altar-niche would have been used to stage religious artifacts or statuary for display. Suspended from the red demilune crown is a highly-detailed carved finial like an artichoke with leaves forming a canopy, traced on the outer edges of the fascia with dentil molding and other patterns. The faux-marble backdrop enhances its rich visual depth (a classic expression of Italian and Iberian Baroque design) which creates movement, drama, and grandeur through elaborate ornamentation. Perhaps once part of a church interior, this niche was designed to enshrine a saintly statue, elevating its spiritual presence for one’s own devotion. Out of context and in a domestic space this work becomes a rare and striking piece of sacred art history on its own. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition.
18th Century Portuguese Altar
$2,650.0023.88"H x 18.38"W x 9.50"D
Dimensions: 23 ⅞” H x 18 ⅜” W x 9 ½” D
A fantastic oratory or tabletop altar from 18th century Portugal, made of carved, painted, and gilded wood taking the form of a small cabinet (where religious statuary would be displayed). The niche interior is painted a leafy shade of green, framed by an arched doorway flanked on the sides by scrolling corbels which continue down the sides as floral-foliate carvings in high-relief. Dark, angular molding that wraps the chamfered corners of the crown and the stepped base appears reddish brown now, with traces of the original gilding. The left and right sides of the case are decorated in a faux marble finish of implied veining which underscores that this altar is a unique work of art by its own merits. Recreate your own sacred space with this handmade shrine, for regular devotion, reflection, or simply to showcase a personally meaningful object. French 19th Century Forged Iron Andirons
$995.0027.50"H x 11.50"W x 20.25"D
Dimensions: 27 ½” H x 11 ½” W x 20 ¼” D
A sculptural pair of French 19th century cast iron fireplace andirons, or chenets, that hold as much fascination as the roaring fire behind them. Stylistically they fall between the brutalism of Gothic Revival and creative expression of Art Nouveau: square “baskets” at the top of each pillar for warming emanate from thick rods equipped with scrolling spit hooks and a half-moon ornament of hammered texture that may also be functional and not simply decorative. In between the bowed front legs is a ribbon of steel pinched to whimsical arches to complement the curvaceous designs elsewhere. The hand-forged rod creating the back leg is how the burning logs are elevated; naturally the pair have developed a reddish-brown patina from oxidation of the iron and more than a century of exposure to high heat. Please view the detailed images to see more. Sold as a pair.
French 18th Century Forged Iron Andirons
$2,200.0035.13"H x 14"W x 26"D
Dimensions: 35 ⅛” H x 14” W x 26” D
A towering pair of 18th century French forged, wrought iron andiron-chenets to watch over the hearth. They include a small basket at the top for warming, the rim impressed with a geometric pattern that is repeated on the column and contrasted by the twisted detail of the rods. Scrolled elements curl outward from the pillars attaching multiple spit hooks to adjust for cooking temperatures. Decorative scrollwork in between the arched legs are reminiscent of fleur-de-lis to underscore the French-made origins of these sculptural fireplace tools. Designed as a complementary pair, each andiron is the mirror image of the other with an offset hind leg (the bracket to elevate the burning logs) supported by a spike. Note that the stylized dragon heads remain intact but one of the rings is missing from the left. Please view the detailed images to see more. Sold as a pair.
French 19th Century Gothic Revival Andirons
$895.0022.25"H x 9.75"W x 18.50"D
Dimensions: 22 ¼” H x 9 ¾” W x 18 ½” D
A sculptural pair of French 19th century cast iron fireplace andirons–or chenets–guardians of the hearth who draw as much attention as the roaring fire behind them. Stylistically they reference Gothic Revival and Art Nouveau verging on Deco: the stylized face of a lady at the top of each reeded pillar soars upward from cartouches decorated with scrolling motifs forming the junction of the three legs (an arch at the front and the log riser on the back). The pair reflect a reddish-brown patina from oxidation of the iron and centuries of exposure to high heat. Please view the detailed images to see more. Sold as a pair.
French 18th Century Forged Iron Andirons
$895.0022.75"H x 9.75"W x 20.25"D
Dimensions: 22 ¾” H x 9 ¾” W x 20 ¼” D
A slender pair of French 18th century hand-wrought fireplace andirons. They are Gothic-Mediterranean in style emboldened by a reddish brown patina from oxidation of the iron and centuries of exposure to high heat. Known as “landiers” in French, these heavy andirons are designed for cooking indicated by spit hooks just above their feet, and caged cups at the top for warming over the flames. Please view the detailed images to see more. Sold as a pair.
Italian Pair of 19th Century Giltwood Appliqués
$8,400.0033.25"H x 15"W x 4.50"D
Dimensions: 33 ¼” H x 15” W x 4 ½” D
A stunning pair of Italian 19th century giltwood wall appliqués–decorative elements to enhance the architectural program–likely obtained from a church or cathedral as they are flat and unfinished on the backs, intended to be viewed from front. The Eternal Flame urn forms are handcarved with stunning Neoclassical motifs and textures that not only conveys the power of the church but also the lasting influence of the Empire shaped by Napoleon’s vision. At the top of each urn is a textured, waving flame that would have been illuminated by candlelight to magnify its aura. Pairs of eagle heads–iconic symbols of the period–are mounted on each side of the urn’s shoulder with an amber glass rosette embedded in between them. Festooned swags emphasize the curvature and fullness of the urn which is revisited again where the form tapers toward the base as fluted carvings mixed with additional floral-foliate references unifying the exuberance of the design. Block feet painted the color of red bole elevate the urns to stabilize them on a table or mantel. Note that evidence of wax is still visible on the backsides, confirming their historic age. Dimensions: 30” H x 7 ¾” W x 7 ¾” D

Note that they are not entirely gilded to save resources as the pair would have been against the altar and not seen in the round, so one vertical strip on the backside appears more of a burnt sienna than gold. Please view the detailed images to see more of these amazing candlesticks. Sold as a pair.
French 19th Century Raised Embroidery of Madonna & Child
$2,800.0050.75"H x 36.13"W x 1.38"D
Dimensions: 50 ¾” H x 36 ⅛” W x 1 ⅜” D
An impressive work of textile art, this French 19th century raised gold embroidery of the Madonna & Child resembles liturgical vestments such as a cope or chasuble that a member of the clergy would wear to mass, applying the same techniques and quality to a more static image set within a wood frame. The appliqués are mounted on ivory silk with a moiré pattern that gives the illusion of faux bois, shifting and rippling in the light along with the metallic threads. Mary and the Christ child are rendered with handpainted faces and hands that achieve the kind of tenderness observed in Italian Renaissance art; they are wrapped in robes with a variety of textures & stiches to indicate the depth of gathered folds of fabric, including gold sequins, as she holds the child safely over the embroidered red serpent around her feet. The figural vignette is contained within orphrey or orfoi embroidered border of foliate and floral theme in gold, green, pale blue and red. Delicate, scrolling vines grow outward from the textile border across the negative space of ivory silk toward the ebonized, carved wood frame protecting the delicate work.
