This whimsical pair of newly-electrified iron and crystal candle sconces were made in France, late 19th century. The large, multi-tiered fixtures have five lights each using chandelier-base bulbs in ivory colored candle covers, extending from bronze bobeches festooned with cut crystal drops. Apples, grapes, pears and lemons-most with leaves-are intermixed in colors of amber, emerald and amethyst, making these sconces a cornucopia of beautifully-colored fruit and dazzling crystals. Originally made to burn candles, we have had the pair inspected, cleaned and wired for electricity in accordance with US electrical standards using UL-listed components. A pair of vintage mid-20th century French “Maria Theresa” style wall sconces in a dazzling array of glass blowing techniques, set off with brass hardware. Each sconce features a pair of arms with faux candle covers for candelabra-base lightbulbs, rising from clear glass bobeche dripping with sharply faceted crystals. The brass arms are enclosed by flat strips of pressed glass pieces that are held in place by tiny rosettes, true to the “Maria Theresa” style. An impressive ensemble of a pair of sconces with matching table lamp, dating to mid-century France. The bulbous, etched glass globes are blown with faint alternating bands of clear and white that cast an almost tactile glow on the wall or table. Elongated brass backplates mounted to the wall support the ebonized spears from which the globes rise. The fixtures each have a round brass plate at the top of the glass diffuser that is removable for changing a single light bulb. All three pieces have been professionally rewired for the US using UL listed parts.
