Italian 19th Century Two-drawer Inlay Commode
$6,295.0035.50"H x 46.75"W x 19.75"D
Dimensions: 35 ½” H x 46 ¾” W x 19 ¾” D
This Italian chest of drawers from the 19th century, in its wide, rectilinear proportions and sturdy construction becomes a showcase for the walnut veneer with thin bands of marquetry to complement the movement in the grain. The top surface is arranged as a central panel enclosed by thin lines of skillful inlay like a twisted rope, creating definition on the edges. Two deep drawers feature veneered fronts in linear orientation, repeating the same rope twist inlay to suggest paneling, interrupted by oval brass ring pulls. One key present to share between the (two) working locks. The drawers slide easily, opening to a clean interior lined in gorgeous vintage Florentine paper of sepia and white floral pattern. Square, tapering legs inspired by Louis XVI elevate the case from the floor. Departing from the standard three row commodes in the French tradition, this example has a modern sophistication that will appeal to collectors of 20th century design as well. Cleaned, tightened and polished with a French paste wax, this chest of drawers is ready for your interior. French Walnut 19th Century Louis XVI Style Commode
$3,995.0032.50"H x 50.75"W x 21.13"D
Dimensions: 32 ½” H x 50 ¾” W x 21 ⅛” D
A solid walnut commode from France, 19th century, with all the signature elements of the Louis XVI style exhibiting curious patina to blend with interiors from rustic to more refined. The top surface is composed of multiple, honey-gold planks that have been carved to turreted corners, etched with the erratic lines of some wood-boring insect that has long since moved on. Making up the body of the piece are three spacious drawers that glide easily using brass ring pulls; note that keyhole escutcheons are only decorative without a key present. The drawer fronts exhibit the same tactile patina as the top surface and their interiors are of excellent proportion to offer generous storage for clothes, linens, and other household essentials. Fluting on the turreted corners flows into turned, tapering legs lifting the case from the floor. Spanish 19th Century Painted Chest from Catalonia
$6,400.0053"H x 46.25"W x 29.25"D
Dimensions: 53” H x 46 ¼” W x 29 ¼” D
This massive antique chest of drawers from Catalonia (Spain) exhibits a pure tactile joy in how the aqua blue paint has eroded to a soft, chippy pattern with areas of walnut wood grain showing through. Dating to the turn of the 19th century (circa 1800), the rectilinear form is composed of five, massive drawers opened by brass ring pull hardware. Refreshingly there is no superfluous ornament that would compete with or distract from the ambitious construction of thick, solid planks exhibiting wild knots and grain patterns evident when the drawers are open. The case has been gently cleaned with a French paste wax to preserve and highlight the historic character. Please view the detailed images to see more.

French 18th Century Louis XVI Style Inlay Mahogany Commode

An extraordinary French mahogany commode from the 18th century, Louis XVI Period, decorated with an impressive marquetry technique that creates movement and definition over the drawer fronts and side panels. The commode retains its original slab of gray marble, the surface animated by frenetic white veining, and shaped to turreted front corners. Across the top row are three drawers of geometric marquetry designs to outline them–like two rows of twisting ribbon–in alternating blonde and dark woods. Brass bail pulls operate the left and right drawers while the middle drawer requires the key to function as a pull (lock is intact but does not turn). The two wide drawers across the center and below, follow the rhythm as above with three distinct rectangular “frames” around the drawer hardware, in graphic marquetry of dark/light woods that have been hand-decorated in wispy patterns of red pigment suggesting plumes or waves–adding depth and regal grandeur to this already fine example of the woodworker’s craft. The side panels have complementary inlaid designs, themes which are replicated down the turrets (using marquetry to imply fluted recesses) moving into the conical feet so from every perspective one can admire the visionary intentions of the maker even two centuries later.
