English 19th century towering chest-on-chest in the Georgian style, circa 1850, the case is built from mahogany with beautiful coloration in the grain. Dentil molding accentuates the crown over side-by-side top drawers mounted on a stack of six spacious drawers. Of the eight drawers, seven drawers retain functioning locks with two keys included (the upper left drawer does not lock). Heavy brass drop handles facilitate easy opening and closing of the drawers which have been thoroughly cleaned inside. The base unit projects slightly beyond the chest on top, underscoring the feeling of permanence and strength, rising on beautifully carved bracket feet. This Italian chest of drawers from the 19th century, in its wide, rectilinear proportions and sturdy construction becomes a showcase for the walnut veneer with thin bands of marquetry to complement the movement in the grain. A substantial French Empire commode from the 19th century made of glowing walnut and proportionately large rosette hardware on the drawers. The commode’s top is an impressive single plank where the full grain can be appreciated for its color and gentle striations, held in place by square peg joinery. The overhanging frieze drawer uses two ring pulls to open mounted on répoussé brass backplates shaped like camelias or roses; there is no keyhole escutcheon, instead the bookmatched veneer animates the center by a feathered appearance. Two (detached) columns finished with brass capitals & bases flank the lower drawers using the same type of ring pulls and matching escutcheons over the keyhole. No key is present. A lovely commode from Sweden, circa 1830, crafted in book-matched mahogany and gray marble with exciting flashes of brass hardware that alludes to a Louis XVI influence met with the pared-down sensibility of the Gustavian. On top, a slab of gray, almost green stone is shaped to chamfered front corners that overhang the fluted pilasters. The three drawers feature bookmatched fronts in a delicate feathered pattern of grain outlined in brass trim, complemented by small ring-pulls and ribbon & bow escutcheons (however no key is present). The angled pilasters are enhanced with brass inlay within the fluting, crowned by a small rosette at the top. A striking Italian commode/chest of drawers from circa 1850, all hand-crafted from cedar that has taken on a deep mahogany tone which enhances the drama of the carved motif along the front. Look closely to see that the top surface is one solid plank, a remarkable feat of woodworking skill, that continues throughout this handsome case piece. The gadrooned pattern spanning the fronts of the three, wide drawers are mirror images of each other extending outward from the middle line. Inside the drawers one finds the most incredible decorative paper lining of heraldic lions and fleur-de-lis which may be a more recent addition but isn’t out of line with the style. An original lock is intact for the top drawer however no key is present. Note that the brass knobs vary slightly in their patterning but all have similar profiles to appear cohesive. An extraordinary Italian walnut commode from the 19th century, Neoclassical in style, decorated with a graphic marquetry of dark/light woods that creates movement and definition over the exterior. The surface uses two, beautiful planks shaped to chamfered corners and outlined around the edges with a sawtooth pattern of inlay in contrasting light/dark tones. A case of five drawers includes two small drawers in the top row over three wider drawers all inlaid with a geometric design of elongated checkerboard strips of alternating blonde and dark woods. Each drawer opens by ring pull hardware; note the escutcheons are only decorative without an original key present. Chamfered front corners are inlaid with a very narrow triangle rising from the feet to end in a little diamond perhaps suggesting a candle or symbolizing an eternal flame. An extraordinary French mahogany commode from the 18th century, Louis XVI Period, decorated with an impressive marquetry technique that creates movement and definition over the drawer fronts and side panels. The commode retains its original slab of gray marble, the surface animated by frenetic white veining, and shaped to turreted front corners. Across the top row are three drawers of geometric marquetry designs to outline them–like two rows of twisting ribbon–in alternating blonde and dark woods. Brass bail pulls operate the left and right drawers while the middle drawer requires the key to function as a pull (lock is intact but does not turn). The two wide drawers across the center and below, follow the rhythm as above with three distinct rectangular “frames” around the drawer hardware, in graphic marquetry of dark/light woods that have been hand-decorated in wispy patterns of red pigment suggesting plumes or waves–adding depth and regal grandeur to this already fine example of the woodworker’s craft. The side panels have complementary inlaid designs, themes which are replicated down the turrets (using marquetry to imply fluted recesses) moving into the conical feet so from every perspective one can admire the visionary intentions of the maker even two centuries later.
