French 19th Century Forged Iron Andirons
$995.0027.50"H x 11.50"W x 20.25"D
Dimensions: 27 ½” H x 11 ½” W x 20 ¼” D
A sculptural pair of French 19th century cast iron fireplace andirons, or chenets, that hold as much fascination as the roaring fire behind them. Stylistically they fall between the brutalism of Gothic Revival and creative expression of Art Nouveau: square “baskets” at the top of each pillar for warming emanate from thick rods equipped with scrolling spit hooks and a half-moon ornament of hammered texture that may also be functional and not simply decorative. In between the bowed front legs is a ribbon of steel pinched to whimsical arches to complement the curvaceous designs elsewhere. The hand-forged rod creating the back leg is how the burning logs are elevated; naturally the pair have developed a reddish-brown patina from oxidation of the iron and more than a century of exposure to high heat. Please view the detailed images to see more. Sold as a pair.
French 18th Century Forged Iron Andirons
$2,200.0035.13"H x 14"W x 26"D
Dimensions: 35 ⅛” H x 14” W x 26” D
A towering pair of 18th century French forged, wrought iron andiron-chenets to watch over the hearth. They include a small basket at the top for warming, the rim impressed with a geometric pattern that is repeated on the column and contrasted by the twisted detail of the rods. Scrolled elements curl outward from the pillars attaching multiple spit hooks to adjust for cooking temperatures. Decorative scrollwork in between the arched legs are reminiscent of fleur-de-lis to underscore the French-made origins of these sculptural fireplace tools. Designed as a complementary pair, each andiron is the mirror image of the other with an offset hind leg (the bracket to elevate the burning logs) supported by a spike. Note that the stylized dragon heads remain intact but one of the rings is missing from the left. Please view the detailed images to see more. Sold as a pair.

$895.0022.25"H x 9.75"W x 18.50"D
Dimensions: 22 ¼” H x 9 ¾” W x 18 ½” D
A sculptural pair of French 19th century cast iron fireplace andirons–or chenets–guardians of the hearth who draw as much attention as the roaring fire behind them. Stylistically they reference Gothic Revival and Art Nouveau verging on Deco: the stylized face of a lady at the top of each reeded pillar soars upward from cartouches decorated with scrolling motifs forming the junction of the three legs (an arch at the front and the log riser on the back). The pair reflect a reddish-brown patina from oxidation of the iron and centuries of exposure to high heat. Please view the detailed images to see more. Sold as a pair.
