    Dimensions: 37 ¾” H x 55 ⅜” W x 23” D

A circa 1780 English settle or hall bench in solid oak with paneled back and removable bench cushion. After nearly three centuries the wood appears ebonized with dark patina that enhances the sharp angles of the recesses in the paneling. A foam bench cushion upholstered in cinnamon-toned, velvety material of gently worn condition rests on a (more recent) wood deck for support. From the side view one can see holes that are evidence the seat was originally made of rush, now the zippered cushion is a modern and practical choice for cleaning and comfort. • French 19th Century Bentwood Bench with Pierced Back

    $3,995.00

    38.25"H x 103.25"W x 18.50"D

    Dimensions: 38 ¼” H x 103 ¼” W x 18 ½” D

This striking late 1800s French walnut bentwood and turned-leg armless hall bench, easily seating four to five guests, reflects an innovative period for woodcraft in the 19th century to meet increasing demands of an upwardly mobile society while still honoring the aesthetic appeal of natural materials. This bench is a fine example of bentwood furniture, a technique pioneered by Thonet of Austria, heating veneer and solid wood, manipulating it into forms not only functional but quite comfortable. A decorative pierced design across the linear seat and backrest would have been a practical feature to offer ventilation when waiting at a hot train station or other high-traffic public gathering place, such as for sports, education, and entertainment. On the upper corners of the backside are pads made of leather to protect the wall from damage caused by the endless rush of people in any of these scenarios. Three gorgeously turned front legs and three sabered back legs elevate the bench from the floor leaving room underneath for personal effects and luggage. Expected patina from time and use; recently cleaned and polished with a French paste wax to maintain the warm, inviting glow history has left upon the walnut. Please note there are a few areas of cracking and warping in the veneer, view the detailed images to see more.
