This French 19th century trumeau mirror combines the architectural with the artistic, fusing an oil on canvas work in the top panel above the rectangular mirror plate below. Set within a frame of painted sage-green that is trimmed in gold gilt molding in fishscale motif, the painting is in a mostly blue and green palette to reinforce the pastoral setting with touches of pink for romance. It depicts a rural landscape on the edge of a river or stream where a young couple are resting beneath a tree joined by a dog and baby lambs. He leans toward her with affection, but her pensive face is oriented toward something farther afield. The original mirror plate sparkles with foxing and crystallization. This romantic trumeau is a lovely combination of a piece that is both architectural and artistic. To the lower left one observes a finely dressed lady playing a type of string instrument for her beau, leaning toward her with keen interest. A craquelure texture in the paint and some loss (including a tear) partially obscures full appreciation of the landscape. The original mirror plate–sparkling with a few crystals and spotty foxing–is surrounded by carved molding that is coordinating but not identical to the artwork above. French Mirrors

French mirrors come in many shapes and sizes, including rectangular and oval. Generally, this type of mirror has a simplistic, geometric design, which gives it a more modern appearance than its English counterpart. If you want a French mirror with a classically antique appearance, consider a painted trumeau or a Rococo-style frame.

Rococo Mirrors

Rococo mirrors typically have dramatic designs featuring representations of ribbons, leaves, feathers, and other delicate elements. The frames of these mirrors have visual depth with several layers, along with metallic finishes or dark colors. This type of mirror may work in your home if you like exuberant designs or if you want to add personality to a room.

Regency Mirrors

Regency mirrors typically have an oval or rectangular shape with a slim frame, columns, and cornices as design features. This type of mirror dates back to the 1800s, and it was popular among the English for the first part of the 19th century. These mirrors are typically a dresser component.

Gothic

The design of gothic mirrors generally represents that of a church. This type of mirror was popular from the 12th to 16th centuries, and again during the Victorian era. Design features of this mirror include a walnut or oak construction, pointed top arches, and ornate carvings.
