This French Empire mirror (c. 1800) is symmetrical to hang in either direction, exhibiting low-relief floral decorations that leave ample space for the gilt molding to reveal its red bole underneath the gold–adding warmth and texture to the rectilinear design. The molding is largely plain and smooth, with rococo theme garlands of botanical and scallop shell motif stationed at the corners and midpoints along the perimeter. 19th century French gilt wood starburst mirror in alternating rays of flames and lightning bolts that radiates a kind of energy and dynamism to stand on its own or stand out in a gallery wall. Arranged in three distinct themes, the sharpness of the jagged rays is complemented by little red bole swirls toward the mirror plate that amplifies the tactile warmth of patinated gold gilt. A smooth corona surrounds the (flat) mirror plate at center, dusted with a thin layer of foxing that confirms its original condition. A French, 19th century Louis Philippe mirror with lightly carved trellised design and beaded texture surrounding the gold gilt frame that has become more defined where the gilding has subsided to the red bole underneath. Look closely at the bottom corners and a subtle foliate pattern emerges, softening the geometry of the crosshatched design. Mirror glass is likely a modern replacement without the expected foxing or crystallization but still right at home in a range of transitional to traditional decorating tastes. Flat, reeded molding is an ideal surface area to reflect the lustre of gold leaf on this exciting pair of French mirrors from circa 1870, now patinated with a fine craquelure texture. Symmetrical for mounting in either direction, these rectangular mirrors would look sharp in any room (or two); the likely new glass is untouched by foxing to reflect every detail. An extraordinary cushion mirror from 19th century France, the reflective qualities are secondary to the artistry seen in the gilded, repoussé metal decoration cascading from the pediment on top to surround the glass on every plane. In the crown are high-relief representations of botanical themes and a few military references like flags, arrows, and drums à la Louis XVI. The rectangular mirror at center projects outward from the frame, dazzling with crystals along the bottom edge which calls attention to the hand-cut bevel around the perimeter. Moving outward from the center, a border of the cushioned metal is edged in a ebonized wood molding of reeded texture that is repeated toward the outer border of mirrored panels ornamented with elaborate corners and stations in between. The mirror plates are original, exhibiting varying degrees of foxing and a thin haze of oxidation. A stunning 19th century French gold gilt mirror of thick egg & dart molding around the original glass. The frame is of impressive scale, with bold definition between the smoothness of the protruding eggs and the linear patterns outlining them, enhanced by deep red bole underneath. A dramatic and theatrical late 19th Century carved and gilt frame, made in Glasgow, Scotland by picture framers Menzies & Son according to the original label affixed to the back. Note the original painting has been replaced by new mirror glass. This amazing frame, at first glance, appears to be inspired by French rococo, with thick, scrolling foliate and shell motifs wrapping the edges against a reticulated background that plays on a sense of depth and texture. The artistry in this piece is reflective of a flourishing creative environment during the period known as the Glasgow School, a regional style parallel to Art Nouveau. A wonderful 18th century French gold giltwood mirror, likely made as a wedding gift, the square frame is dense with texture and pattern of grape vines to brighten up any room. Unusual for this genre of mirrors, the expected pedimented at the top has been curiously omitted, telling its symbolic narrative of abundance through delicate tendrils and grape clusters that wrap around the French gray painted background. The foliate elements are bookended at the lower corners with rosettes which transition into the tall feet elevating and protecting the frame. Beaded molding on the interior surrounds the original mirror plate that shows a line of foxing toward the middle among other spots of textural oxidation. A French giltwood mirror in the Louis XVI style, circa 1790, with incredible, carved motifs set off by the deep green painted backpanel. Flowing from the top of the piece, ribbons cascade down to the upper edges of the frame around two cornucopia flanking the cartouche in the middle, suggesting abundance even in small proportions. The original mirror plate is surrounded by a low, dentil molding and finished at the lower corners by ornate carvings, which transition into little ebonized feet to lift and protect the delicate work. A spectacular French 19th century gold gilt mantel mirror with original mirror glass revealing curious patches of foxing across the top. The regal molding incorporates textural, floral, and foliate motifs with cartouches under layers of patina exposing some of the red bole underneath. Five equidistant spots of foxing delineate the upper third of the glass and glittering crystals have begun to accumulate along the bottom edge of the frame, confirming the historic age of this striking mantel mirror. This large English convex mirror exudes elegance and style. The thick, gilded outer frame is enhanced by sumptuous carvings of acanthus, stationed at the four cardinal points, the pairs of unfurling leaves stretching in opposite directions.
