An enormous French 19th century stoneware cruche traditionally used as a bottle or demijohn to transport and store water, oil, or wine. The hand of the potter has imparted organic variation to the form with a wabi-sabi quality of utilitarian authenticity, using a salt glaze which creates movement across the (uneven) surface of the bottle in dramatic shifts of color from deep, earthy browns and reds to the neutral tan of the stoneware clay. The bulbous vessel uses a single handle to aid in pouring liquid out of the narrow mouth at the top that would have been corked. An inspiring example of 19th century Portuguese folk art pottery, this handmade terracotta bowl expresses the unique history of decorative arts traditions found across the Iberian peninsula which borrowed imagery from cultures far and wide. Crafted in terracotta and finished with a buttery gold slip glaze, the bowl features whimsical (if not symbolic) crosshatched pyramids in burnt orange, and parallel lines dividing the interior into four quadrants occupied by dark green wave motifs.
