A lovely glazed terra cotta cream bowl from early to mid-20th century France. This antique bowl is in excellent condition, appropriately glazed a translucent chalk-white on the interior and a soft matte exterior. An inspiring example of 19th century Portuguese folk art pottery, this handmade terracotta bowl expresses the unique history of decorative arts traditions found across the Iberian peninsula which borrowed imagery from cultures far and wide. Crafted in terracotta and finished with a buttery gold slip glaze, the bowl features whimsical (if not symbolic) crosshatched pyramids in burnt orange, and parallel lines dividing the interior into four quadrants occupied by dark green wave motifs. The ruffled “pie crust” rim is gently pinched to round out the decorative effects, but like similar fajalauza bowls from Spain this piece would have been used regularly in the kitchen and not just to display. Robert Picault Vallauris Mid Century Pharmacy Jar

French vintage mid-century pharmacy jar from Vallauris, the site of an important and influential ceramics industry noted for its utilitarian kitchenware balanced with the artistry of handmade pottery which drew Robert Picault, Picasso, and Roger Capron to make some of their most iconic designs there. This example follows the silhouette of traditional European pharmacy jars using a white slip glaze with deep green foliate decoration around the tall lid and calling attention to the text on the cylinder. Within a shield-shaped label is “VNG Arcoe” for a now unfamiliar herb, perhaps a translation of Pau d’Arco harvested in South America. A pair of French Empire period Old Paris Porcelain vases, circa 1810, with painted landscapes and figural scenes on each side. The Classical amphora profile features a gold-banded mouth at the top, transitioning to the narrow neck and tapering body framed by a pair of handles with low-relief caryatid faces in place of the openings, lifted by square bases all accented in gold gilt trim. The landscape imagery–coordinating but not identical–is of a lush and tranquil environment in an earth tone palette. On the reverse side of each vase are a pair of figures, again that are unique but similar, locked in what appears to be a tense exchange.
