French 18th Century Louis XVI Style Inlay Mahogany Commode
$9,800.00
SKU: 4854-5
Dimension: 32.50"H x 51.38"W x 24.25"D
Dimensions: 32 ½” H x 51 ⅜” W x 24 ¼” D
An extraordinary French mahogany commode from the 18th century, Louis XVI Period, decorated with an impressive marquetry technique that creates movement and definition over the drawer fronts and side panels. The commode retains its original slab of gray marble, the surface animated by frenetic white veining, and shaped to turreted front corners. Across the top row are three drawers of geometric marquetry designs to outline them–like two rows of twisting ribbon–in alternating blonde and dark woods. Brass bail pulls operate the left and right drawers while the middle drawer requires the key to function as a pull (lock is intact but does not turn). The two wide drawers across the center and below, follow the rhythm as above with three distinct rectangular “frames” around the drawer hardware, in graphic marquetry of dark/light woods that have been hand-decorated in wispy patterns of red pigment suggesting plumes or waves–adding depth and regal grandeur to this already fine example of the woodworker’s craft. The side panels have complementary inlaid designs, themes which are replicated down the turrets (using marquetry to imply fluted recesses) moving into the conical feet so from every perspective one can admire the visionary intentions of the maker even two centuries later. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, this commode is ready to be enjoyed in your interior. Be sure to view the detailed images to see the current condition as the right side panel appears to have been repaired.

$3,500.0033.75"H x 49.75"W x 22.63"D
Dimensions: 33 ¾” H x 49 ¾” W x 22 ⅝” D
A grand, solid walnut commode from 19th century France, aligning with the Louis XVI taste, it is a multipurpose storage piece scaled to use practically anywhere around the home. Note there is an area of loss to the stone toward the back left, see the image gallery for more information. Modest in construction, the case of three drawers use brass bail pull hardware which lends functional ornamentation to the piece, complemented by small keyhole escutcheons leaving great swathes of the wood to be appreciated for the color and grain. French 19th Century Empire Painted Commode
$5,200.0033.88"H x 42.25"W x 20.75"D
Dimensions: 33 ⅞” H x 42 ¼” W x 20 ¾” D
A French Empire three-drawer commode from the 19th century with its original marble top. A more recent artistic update by a Caribbean-blue painted finish complements the gilt bronze accents, for exciting contrasts in textures and tones. The top surface of dark, nearly black stone is dotted with the fossilized remains of ancient marine animals, among the curious patterns of marbleization. Note that the stone displays the expected patina of scratches and other signs of the commode’s historic age so please view the image gallery for more details. A pair of gilt bronze caryatid busts top the inverted pilasters which flank the stack of three, wide drawers that open by brass lion ring pulls. Escutcheons on each drawer front are purely decorative, no key is present, but their ornate wing motifs underscore the mythical and fantastic inspiration the Empire taste is known for. Contrasting slate blue paint has been applied as a decorative border around the drawer hardware and defines the pilasters further, which draws the eye downward to the wonderful paw feet at the floor. The matte paint remains mostly smooth with some areas of mottled craquelure. Cleaned and tightened, this antique is ready for your interior. Dutch Empire 19th Century Commode
$5,600.0035.50"H x 58.38"W x 22.88"D
Dimensions: 35 ½” H x 58 ⅜” W x 22 ⅞” D
A Dutch Empire three-drawer commode from the 19th century with its original painted finish and touches of Napoleonic influence over pine construction. The top surface has lost much of the original chalk-white paint leaving traces of a cerused effect on the grain and differentiated from the case by a dentil molding. A pair of caryatid busts on tapering pilasters accented with gold paint flank the stack of three, wide drawers that open by brass ring pulls. Louis XVI style brass escutcheons on each drawer front are purely decorative, no key is present. This substantial storage piece is cleverly divided into two bodies for easier lifting up narrow staircases and placement in the home: two upper drawers are one section, leaving the bottom drawer on claw feet separate. The semigloss paint remains mostly smooth with some areas of loss and craquelure pattern. Be sure to see the detailed images to see the current condition of this painted chest of drawers.

French 18th Century Louis XVI Style Inlay Mahogany Commode
