French 18th Century Louis XV Parlor Suite
$9,800.0037"H x 65.88"W x 25.50"D
Dimensions: 37” H x 65 ⅞” W x 25 ½” D
French, 18th century Louis XV period seating ensemble to instantly transform a parlor or living room into a grand “salon” with seven pieces: one camelback sofa, three fauteuil armchairs, and three (armless) side chairs. Upholstery of cut velvet in pale green–like a white jade–has been brocaded with tonal damask patterns, harmonizing with the botanical theme in the caved frames, and outlined in brass nailhead trim. The giltwood frames have patinated over the centuries to reveal the deep red bole underneath, giving definition to the sinuous, rococo curves accented with floral and foliate carvings positioned at strategic points for maximum effect. The thoughtful proportions of the seat interior (balancing the heights and depths) are all quite comfortable, with dense stuffing of horse hair or other natural material that remains mostly firm and supportive underneath the tight upholstery. French 18th Century Period Louis XV Bergere
39.50"H x 32.50"W x 30"D
Dimensions: 39 ½” H x 32 ½” W x 30” D
A fantastic and inviting French Louis XV period (circa 1750) carved oak bergere with more recent upholstery. The exposed wood frame, in all those sinuous curves typical of the Louis XV taste, is accented with floral and foliate carvings at the top, apron, and knees of the chair’s front legs. The seat interior, firm and deep to read or lounge, is currently dressed in a printed cotton upholstery of pheasants and flowers, carried through the outside arms but the backside is plain linen. Dainty cabriole legs lift the chair from the floor. We recommend having the frame tightened when adding new upholstery. Look closely to appreciate the elegantly carved splats on the seat back and how they emulate the silhouette of Corinthian columns. Like most chairs of the Georgian period, the drama of the seat backs is balanced with generous proportions of the actual seats, which in these examples widen at the front and are carved with a shallow dip for comfort. Legs are mostly square and straight contributing to the overall solidity of the design both in a structural and visual sense. French Pair of Louis XV Wingback Bergeres & Ottoman
$6,795.0042"H x 28.25"W x 28.25"D
Dimensions: 42” H x 28 ¼” W x 28 ¼” D
A sophisticated pair of French 19th century wingback bergere armchairs and large matching ottoman. One side of the ottoman is concave to fit the bowed front of the chair–forming a kind of chaise longue as desired–and curves out on the opposite side, along the lines of a Duchesse Brisee set. Typical of the Louis XV style, carved oak frames outlining the navy blue upholstery are accented by low finials in foliate motif along the serpentine curves from the handrail through the arms. They are accented with little manchette upholstered elbow pads for comfort. Supremely comfortable cushions on each wide seat make this set easy to incorporate into any existing home decor. The chenille-type fabric, likely added in the 20th century, in luminous indigo blue is in fair condition with a burn mark on one of the seats. Comfortable and deep, the seat height is 17 ¾” to the crown. Please know the chair legs have been tightened, and all the frames cleaned & polished with a French paste wax to be ready for their next chapter. Italian 17th Century Walnut and Leather Armchair
$2,800.0043.38"H x 26.50"W x 22.75"D
Dimensions: 43 ⅜” H x 26 ½” W x 22 ¾” D
This Italian armchair from 1680 may look like a throne, in fact it is a wonderfully patinated example of a friar’s chair–historically referred to as a “ sillon de frailero” type of chair found in abbeys. The friar’s armchair was initially an Italian design and quickly became associated with Spain and the colonies after its introduction in the 16th century. This wonderful armchair from the 17th century has a tall and sturdy frame carved from walnut, stretching a thick leather backrest and seat which are secured by two rows of nailheads. As this was not necessarily a chair for comfort, the lines of the arms and legs are mostly flat and straight to encourage good posture. Wonderful craquelure patina covers the dark leather, while the wood grain is marked with dense patina from nearly four centuries of use. Please view the detailed images of this special antique armchair.
